The Basics

What Is Reformer
Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a full-body workout performed on a specialist machine called a reformer. Using springs, pulleys and controlled movements, it provides adjustable resistance to help improve strength, flexibility, balance and posture.

Unlike mat-based Pilates, the reformer adds resistance through a spring system that can be increased or decreased depending on your fitness level and the exercise. This means every movement challenges your muscles differently — activating more of your body than you would on the floor alone.

The result? A workout that's simultaneously challenging and restorative — building long, lean muscle while protecting your joints and improving your overall movement quality.

Why People Love It

The Benefits

Builds Long, Lean Muscle

The spring resistance trains your muscles through their full range of motion, building strength without adding bulk. Expect a longer, leaner physique with improved muscle definition.

Strengthens Your Core

Every exercise on the reformer demands core engagement. Your deep abdominal muscles, back muscles and pelvic floor all work together constantly — building the stability that supports everything else you do.

Improves Flexibility & Mobility

The controlled movements and resistance allow you to stretch deeply while strengthening simultaneously. You'll notice greater range of motion and easier movement in daily life within weeks.

Enhances Posture & Balance

Reformer Pilates trains postural muscles that most gym workouts miss. Better posture reduces back pain, improves how you stand and move, and makes you look and feel more confident.

Supports Injury Prevention

Low impact by nature, reformer work strengthens the stabilising muscles around joints. Many physiotherapists use reformer exercises as rehabilitation — perfect if you're recovering or have joint concerns.

Suitable For All Fitness Levels

The spring system is fully adjustable, making it equally effective for complete beginners and advanced athletes. Instructors modify every exercise so you always work at the right intensity for your body.

The Difference

Reformer vs Mat Pilates

Both are excellent — but if you want more challenge, resistance and variety, the reformer takes your practice to another level.

Reformer Pilates ✦

Spring resistance adds challenge and can be dialled up or down for any exercise

Greater muscle activation — your stabilisers and prime movers all fire simultaneously

Hundreds of exercise variations — lying, sitting, standing, kneeling on the machine

Machine provides support, making it easier to achieve correct form for beginners

Guided by instructors in a studio environment with equipment ready to use

Faster strength gains thanks to adjustable resistance throughout each movement

VS
Mat Pilates

Uses bodyweight only — great for learning fundamentals but limited resistance

Fewer muscle groups activated at once — exercises are more isolated

Smaller exercise library with most movements performed lying or sitting on the floor

Harder to maintain correct alignment without the machine's structure for support

Can be done anywhere — no equipment needed, very accessible

Builds core strength and awareness as an excellent foundation for reformer work

It's For Everyone

Who Is Reformer Pilates For?

One of the biggest myths is that Pilates is only for dancers or women. Reformer Pilates is genuinely for everybody.

🔰

Complete Beginners

No experience needed. Your instructor will guide you through every movement, and the machine's support makes learning the correct technique easy and safe.

🏋️

Gym-Goers & Athletes

Add a competitive edge — stronger stabilisers, better posture and improved mobility will directly enhance your performance in any sport or training discipline.

🩹

Injury Recovery

The low-impact, adjustable nature makes it ideal for those recovering from injury or managing chronic pain. Many physios actively recommend reformer work.

Busy Professionals

45 minutes on the reformer delivers a complete full-body session. Efficient, effective and a genuine counterbalance to long hours at a desk.

Your First Class

What To Expect

Walking into your first reformer class? Here's exactly what happens.

01

Arrive & Set Up

Arrive 5 minutes early. Your instructor will show you your machine, explain the spring system and make sure your reformer is set up correctly for your body.

02

Warm Up

Classes begin with gentle movements to mobilise your joints and activate your core — preparing your body for the deeper work ahead and helping you tune in to your muscles.

03

The Workout

A series of exercises targeting the full body. Your instructor cues every movement and provides modifications so you always work at the right level — never too easy, never overwhelming.

04

Cool Down & Stretch

Every class ends with a stretch and cool down on the reformer. You'll leave feeling worked but not wrecked — energised, taller and more relaxed than when you walked in.

First Class Tips

Wear fitted clothing

Loose clothing can catch on the machine. Leggings, fitted tops or shorts are ideal.

Grip socks recommended

Pilates grip socks provide stability on the carriage. Available at the studio.

Eat lightly beforehand

Avoid a heavy meal 2 hours before class. Light snacks are fine.

Tell your instructor

Let them know about any injuries or limitations before class. They'll adapt accordingly.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely not. Reformer Pilates is suitable for complete beginners. Our instructors will explain everything before the class begins, guide you through every movement during class, and offer modifications so you're always working at the right level. Many of our most regular members started with zero experience.
Traditional gym training tends to isolate muscle groups and uses heavy loads. Reformer Pilates trains your whole body simultaneously with a focus on controlled movement, alignment and the connection between your muscles. The spring resistance challenges you differently — and the low impact means less wear on your joints. Most people who combine both notice significant improvement in their gym performance too.
Most people feel a difference after their very first class — improved posture, greater body awareness and that pleasant muscle soreness that tells you you've worked something new. Visible changes in strength and shape typically appear within 4–6 weeks of consistent practice (2–3 times per week). Flexibility and posture tend to improve even faster.
Reformer Pilates is low impact and highly adaptable, which is why many physiotherapists refer patients to it as part of their recovery. It's particularly effective for back pain, as it strengthens the deep core muscles that support your spine. Always let your instructor know about any injuries before class so they can modify exercises appropriately. If you have a serious injury, check with your GP or physio first.
Two to three times per week is the sweet spot for most people. This gives your muscles time to recover and adapt between sessions while maintaining consistency. If you're new, start with one or two sessions per week to let your body adjust — the spring resistance activates muscles you may not have used much before. Our Unlimited Reformer membership is designed for members who want to attend as often as they like.
Not at all — this is one of the biggest misconceptions. Reformer Pilates is for everyone. Many professional footballers, rugby players and athletes of all disciplines use it as a core part of their training and recovery. Men often find the core and stability work particularly challenging and rewarding. Our classes are fully mixed and welcoming to all.
Wear comfortable, fitted workout clothing — leggings, shorts, fitted tops. Avoid loose or baggy clothes as they can catch on the machine. Grip socks are recommended for safety and stability on the carriage (available at our studio if you don't have any). Bring a water bottle and, if you have longer hair, tie it up. No shoes are worn on the reformer.
